Gopi chandan is a soft, yellowish clay that Vaishnavas use to mark tilak on the forehead and body. Many devotees apply it every morning as a reminder that the body is a temple of Lord Krishna. In this guide, you will learn what gopi chandan is, how to apply it and how to look after it.

What is gopi chandan?

Gopi chandan is a fine clay that devotees mix with water to make a paste. Tradition links it with the sacred soil of Dwaraka and with the gopis of Vrindavan. Because of this, Vaishnavas treat it with great respect. Moreover, they use it as part of their daily worship.

How to apply gopi chandan tilak

  • First, wash your hands and face, and sit in a clean place.
  • Next, put a few drops of water on a clean dish and rub the clay until it forms a smooth paste.
  • Then, draw two straight lines upward from the nose to the forehead with your finger, in the shape of a U.
  • After that, add a leaf shape between the lines, which represents the Tulsi leaf.
  • Finally, wash your hands, and let the tilak dry before you start your puja.

Many devotees also mark twelve places on the body while they recite the names of Vishnu. If you are new, ask an experienced devotee or your temple to show you the method.

Tips for using gopi chandan

  • Use clean water and a clean finger or a small tilak applicator.
  • Keep the clay dry and covered, so that dust does not spoil it.
  • Apply it after your bath and before your japa or puja.
