How to Chant Japa on a Tulsi Mala: A Beginner’s Guide

Tulsi Japa Mala with Round Beads

Tulsi mala japa is simple to learn: you chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra once on each of the 108 beads. This guide explains every step, so you can begin with confidence.

What is japa?

Japa means the quiet, focused chanting of the Lord’s names. In the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, devotees chant softly, so that they can hear each syllable. You can read more about the practice in the Japa article on Wikipedia.

The Hare Krishna maha-mantra

The maha-mantra has sixteen words. Devotees chant it in this order: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare. One full recitation is chanted on a single bead.

Tulsi mala japa, step by step

  1. Wash your hands, and sit in a clean and quiet place.
  2. Hold the beads between your thumb and middle finger. Keep your index finger pointing away, because it is not used for japa.
  3. Start at the bead next to the large head bead.
  4. Chant the full maha-mantra on that bead. Then, move to the next bead with your thumb.
  5. Continue around the mala until you return to the head bead. This is one round of 108 mantras.
  6. Do not cross over the head bead. Instead, turn the mala around and chant back in the other direction.

How many rounds should I chant?

Initiated ISKCON devotees chant sixteen rounds every day, which takes about two hours. However, a beginner can start with one round and add more slowly. Consistency matters more than speed, so choose a number you can keep each day.

Tips for steady daily japa

  • Chant at the same time every day, ideally in the quiet early morning.
  • Listen carefully to every syllable of the mantra.
  • Keep your mala clean, and do not let it touch the floor.
  • Store it in a japa bag when you are not chanting.

Choosing your Tulsi mala
