Buying a harmonium is a big decision, and the words in the listings can be confusing. This guide explains them in plain language, so you can choose the instrument that suits your kirtan.

1. Lines: how full do you want the sound?

A line is a set of reeds. More lines mean a deeper, richer sound, and a heavier instrument.

2. The scale changer

A scale changer moves the whole harmonium to another key. It lets you match any singer without changing your fingering. A 9-scale changer is plenty for most home and temple kirtan. A 13-scale changer gives you more choice if you often play for guests.

3. Reeds

Reeds make the sound. Good reeds stay in tune and respond quickly. Our listings name the reed type, such as Palitana, Premier Star or RT Deluxe, so you can compare them.

4. Tuning: 440 Hz or 432 Hz

440 Hz is the standard concert pitch. Some devotees prefer 432 Hz and describe it as softer and more natural. Most of our harmoniums let you choose either at checkout.

5. Wood and build

Our harmoniums are made of teak, which is strong and gives a warm tone. Look for solid keys, well-fitted bellows and a good box for travel. If you travel often, see the Portable Folding Harmonium.

Which one for me?

  • Walking on harinam: the Harinam Harmonium
  • Daily practice at home: a 2 or 3 line harmonium
  • Leading large kirtans: the 4 Line 13 Scale
  • A gift or a temple: the Royal Blue, for its beautiful finish

Read more about specific models in our posts on the 4 line harmonium, the Harinam harmonium and the Dolphin harmonium.

Taking care of your choice

Whichever harmonium you buy, treat it gently. Keep it in a dry place, in its box. Do not leave it in the sun. Close the bellows when you finish, and keep drinks away from it. A well-kept harmonium will serve you for many years.

Frequently asked questions

Can a beginner start with a 2 line harmonium?

Yes. A 2 line harmonium is lighter and simpler, and has a clear voice for practice and small kirtans.

How many keys do our harmoniums have?

The Harinam and the Folding harmoniums have 32 keys. The Royal Blue, the 3 Line and the 4 Line have 37 keys.

Is a bigger harmonium always better?

No. A larger harmonium has a fuller sound, and it is also heavier. Choose by how and where you play.
