What “4 line” means

A line is a set of reeds. More lines give a deeper and fuller sound, and this harmonium has four. The reeds are Palitana Premium Star reeds in a Bass, Male, Male, Female arrangement. A coupler lets you join the sets, so one key sounds several reeds together when you want a bigger tone.

13 scales, 11 stops

The 13-scale changer lets you move the whole instrument to the key that suits the singer, without relearning your fingering. This helps a kirtan leader who plays for different voices, and a temple that welcomes guests of every range. The harmonium also has 11 stops, so you can choose which reeds sound.

Who is it for?

Choose the 4 line if you lead kirtan for large groups, play at festivals, or want one instrument for years of serious practice. If you are just starting, our Royal Blue 3 Line harmonium or Dolphin harmonium may suit you better. Our guide to choosing a harmonium explains the differences.

Tips for leading kirtan on a 4 line harmonium

Set the scale first, so the key suits the lead singer. Then choose the stops you want. With more reeds sounding, you will need slow, even bellows, so you can keep a steady tone through a long kirtan. Many leaders start with fewer reeds and open more as the kirtan builds.

Caring for your harmonium

  • Keep it in its box when you are not playing
  • Avoid damp rooms, direct sun and sudden heat
  • Keep water and oil away from the keys and the bellows
  • Close the stops and the bellows gently
  • Ask a good harmonium maker to check the reeds if the tuning drifts
